I wanted to know my roots. I brought every question I had.
At forty-four, I began exploring a spiritual path I had spent years being afraid to approach. I wanted to understand Hoodoo, rootwork, and conjure-and the Black people whose knowledge and spiritual lives belonged at the center of that learning.
I read. I grew herbs. I made my first protection oil while I was still scared. I prayed, followed instructions, questioned myself, and wondered why my experience didn't look like what other people described.
And I often felt alone.
In I Brought My Questions, I share that journey alongside practical discussions of prayer, ancestors, plants, protection, candles, petitions, and discernment. I write about learning without an elder available, respecting the knowledge I encounter, and finding the confidence to participate in my own spiritual life.
Inside, we explore:
Praying in words that belong to you.
Approaching ancestral remembrance with honesty and care.
Understanding the purpose behind materials and methods.
Working with candles and written petitions.
Studying thoughtfully when you are learning on your own.
Listening to your discernment while continuing to ask questions.
Reflection questions and exercises give you space to consider your own experiences as you read.
There is frustration here, humor, and a growing relationship with Mother God. There are things I have come to understand and questions I am still living with. Throughout these pages, Hoodoo remains rooted in Black American history and spiritual life.
If you feel called toward your roots but uncertain about where to begin, pull up a chair.
You can bring your questions, too.
