History of Roads, Vehicles, and Mathematical Applications in Traffic Flows

"Transport has always been more than just a way to get from one place to another-it's a story of innovation, ambition, and humanity's relentless drive to connect people and places." - Tatiana Babicheva

In History of Roads, Vehicles, and Mathematical Applications in Traffic Flows, national award-winning mathematician and educator Tatiana Babicheva takes mathematics fans and car history buffs on a fascinating deep-dive into the evolution of vehicles and transportation systems, from the impressive precision of road engineering in Ancient Rome to the futuristic vision of tomorrow's autonomous vehicles, artificial intelligence and the use of advanced mathematical models in transportation system design and optimization.

You'll explore how transportation advancements shaped history and how mathematics, algorithms, and modelling are transforming the way we move. It's a story filled with surprises, from the construction of transcontinental railroads across desolate lands in the 1800s to the invention of the math-based traffic flow models that govern our modern cities and public transport systems today.

In this illustrated automotive history and intriguing math book for adults, you will learn:

• How roads and transport systems have been developed and improved by scientists and civil engineers, from ancient times to today

• Fascinating examples of how modern mathematics theories have been used to advance vital aspects of modern transportation systems, improving traffic flow, and electric and autonomous vehicle development (with graphs, math equations, and helpful diagrams)

• How physics helped invent vehicles - and why electric cars were popular in the 19th century.

• What happened when the advent of the atomic bomb reshaped mathematical models for road systems (yes, really!).

• The surprising origin of traffic rules, the story of the first car accident, and why some early legislators preferred to restrict pedestrians instead of drivers.

Whether you are a history enthusiast, transport professional, or college math student, History of Roads, Vehicles, and Mathematical Applications in Traffic Flows will vastly expand your knowledge base and encourage you to explore how transportation has revolutionized the way we live, think, and connect!
