As in the first edition, the new edition will stress the importance of historical patterns ' and also the way they are remembered - that shape the present. This provides far more insight into contemporary politics than does a mere chronology of recent events. Thus, the perspective adopted here is that the contemporary Middle Eastern scene is related to the Middle East of the past, not by events in time but by past patterns and memories. Events are significant as markers of patterns, rather than because of their intrinsic characteristics. In this context, Government and Politics of the Contemporary Middle East: Continuity and Change is an interdisciplinary study of the patterns of interaction between government and society in the Middle East.
