L'artiste révolutionnaire Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986) est vénérée pour ses peintures emblématiques de fleurs, de gratte-ciel, de crânes d'animaux et de paysages du sud-ouest. Son travail photographique, cependant, n'a pas été exploré en profondeur jusqu'à présent. Après la mort de son mari, le photographe Alfred Stieglitz, en 1946, la photographie est en effet devenue une partie importante de la production artistique d'O'Keeffe. Elle s'est formée aux côtés du photographe Todd Webb, revisitant des sujets qu'elle avait peints des années auparavant : les reliefs du sud-ouest, la porte noire de sa cour, la route devant sa fenêtre et les fleurs. Les photographies soigneusement composées d'O'Keeffe ne sont pas des études de détails ou de moments décisifs ; ils se concentrent plutôt sur l'agencement des formes.Il s'agit de la première grande enquête sur la photographie d'O'Keeffe et retrace les trente années d'exploration du médium par l'artiste, y compris un catalogue complet de son travail photographique. Les essais d'éminents universitaires abordent l'approche et le style photographiques d'O'Keeffe et situent la photographie dans la pratique globale de l'artiste. Ce volume richement illustré élargit considérablement notre compréhension de l'un des artistes les plus innovants du XXe siècle.Lisa Volpe est conservatrice associée de la photographie au Museum of Fine Arts de Houston. Ariel Plotek est conservateur des beaux-arts au Georgia O'Keeffe Museum.
