Kamala Sabaratnam relates the true story of her idyllic childhood in Sri Lanka and how she grows up hoping to have a good education leading to an interesting career. Her father thinks otherwise, however, and she is given no choice but to submit, at the age of sixteen, to an arranged marriage.
