Augustine moves through evenings that look almost the same: the constant hum of a generator and the small violence of a life calcified by compromise. Once a man with private ambitions and a wife who believed in him, he is now a middling police officer whose days are measured in petty extortions, unpaid debts, and a marriage on the verge of collapse.
