Focus Korean

Focus Korean: Intermediate Level 1B is designed for learners who are ready to move beyond basic intermediate grammar and communicate with greater depth, flexibility, and naturalness. Building on the foundation developed in Intermediate Level 1A, this book introduces grammar patterns that help learners talk about past experiences, describe previous situations, explain circumstances, express intentions, and give advice or strong recommendations.

Created by Suebeet Kim, a private Korean language instructor with over 20 years of teaching experience, Focus Korean combines clear explanations, practical examples, real-life dialogues, structured exercises, and carefully sequenced lessons to help learners steadily develop their Korean communication skills.

In Intermediate Level 1B, learners begin using Korean structures that allow them to talk about experiences and past states, explain the background behind what they say, describe where they are going or what they are doing, and express intentions and expectations more naturally.

Key grammar includes:

• ~어/아 본 적(이) 있다/없다 - talking about past experiences

• ~었었/았었/ㅆ었 - describing a previous state or situation that no longer exists

• ~거든요 - providing background, explanation, or additional information

• ~는 길이다 - describing being on the way to somewhere or doing something

• N(이)요 - adding or confirming a noun in conversation

• ~(으)려면 - expressing an intention or condition: "if you want to" or "if you intend to"

• ~어/아야지요 - expressing what someone definitely should or has to do

• ~아/야 - calling or addressing someone directly

• Practical adverbs and expressions such as 우연히, 항상, 혹시

Each unit includes contextualized dialogues, vocabulary, clear grammar explanations, practical examples, exercises, and answer keys. The lessons are designed to help learners move beyond studying grammar in isolation and understand how Korean expressions work naturally within conversations.

Special attention is given to expressions used for past experiences, previous situations, explanations, intentions, advice, and everyday conversational interactions, helping learners communicate ideas with greater detail and confidence.

Intermediate Level 1B continues the progression from Level 1A by giving learners more tools to explain not only what happened, but also what they have experienced, why they are saying something, where they are going, what they intend to do, and what someone should do.
