A fall to a death results in another fall when the only suspect falls out of sight and goes underground to avoid the authorities; such action begun by an act of corruption in high places. While on the run from the police and the dead man's brother, the fugitive quickly discovers how difficult it is to exist outside his pattern of a conventional middle-class environment as he meets, amongst others, a short-order cook who writes romantic novels, a reformed dipsomaniac Professor and a lady taxi-driver. He finds romance with her by the riverside, another fall; into love, and eventually the villains, the perpetrators of the initial duplicity, receive their just deserts, or nearly so.
