The form opens in October. The work starts now.

Most of what delays a financial aid application happens before the form is even available. Every contributor needs their own verified account, and identity checks fail on the first attempt more often than anyone expects. The tax records are from 2025. If the parents are separated, somebody has to work out which one goes on the form, and that answer takes bank statements and a conversation.

None of that can be done on filing day. All of it can be done now.

What this book is

A preparation guide for the 2027-28 FAFSA, written before the form's screens are finalized and deliberately not built around them. There are no screenshots here and no instructions to click a specific button, because government websites move their menus without warning and a memorized screen layout leaves you stranded. This book teaches the rules underneath the form instead: what the Department of Education actually needs, why it asks, and how to classify your household correctly. The buttons do not matter once the right numbers are on the desk in front of you.

What you will be able to do

  • Know exactly who has to create an account. The contributor rules, including the ones that surprise families every year.
  • Settle which parent supplies the information. Divorced, separated, remarried, unmarried but living together, widowed, and the tiebreaker when support was equal.
  • Have the paperwork ready. Every 2025 document the application asks for, and how long each replacement takes to arrive.
  • Report the right assets and stop worrying about the rest. What is counted, and the longer list that is excluded, including the restored small business and family farm protections.
  • Read your Student Aid Index without panicking. What the number is, what the negative sign means, and the decisions it has no part in.
  • See the Pell Grant rules that changed. The hard cutoff, the foreign income rule, and the scholarship overlap rule that penalizes fully funded students.
  • Work through filing day in order. Seven numbered steps, then what happens to the form after you let go of it.

Eight checklists you can actually tick

The appendices are the part of this book that gets used. Eight checklists and 131 printed boxes: one for the student, one for a married-parent household, one for divorced or separated parents, one for the independent student, then filing day, after submission, families with more than one child in college, and a master list to pin up. Every item carries its own box and a pointer back to the section that explains it.

What it does not do

It will not predict your award or estimate your Student Aid Index, and it does not track every state and college deadline, because those differ by state and change every year. It says so plainly, and it tells you where to check. It is an independent guide. It is not affiliated with the Department of Education, and the FAFSA is free to file at StudentAid.gov.

The right year, and only that year

This is the 2027-28 edition, for the form that opens in October 2026 and covers the academic year beginning in the fall of 2027. Financial aid rules move every cycle, so this book is rewritten and reissued each September rather than patched. If your student starts college in a different year, buy the edition with that year on the cover.

Start before the queue does

The families who file quickly in October are not faster. They are the ones who did this part in September. Scroll up and start the preparation now.
