- The Tomita Method -
The Tomita Method is an approach to fascia, the connective tissue that envelops the body, links its parts, and transmits force between them. It is a systematization of empirical hand techniques refined over years of clinical practice, whose procedures and rationale have since been rebuilt on current knowledge in anatomy and biomechanics. Elements of hand techniques developed in Japan in recent years are also incorporated, though they form only one component of the Method.
Each case is analyzed individually. Techniques are chosen carefully according to the state of the patient and to the origin of the tension or pain. Rather than addressing the painful area itself, the treatment works to restore the distribution of tension and the glide of the fascia throughout the body, thereby relieving that very pain.
Atelier Tomita delivers this approach as a structured educational program. Its purpose is to enable practitioners to perform this assessment and these techniques with their own hands, reliably and reproducibly.
- About This Book -
This Manual is intended to complement the Efficient Fascia Release Course for Professional Therapists, taught under the supervision of an accredited Instructor. It is divided into eight chapters, building up from the basic principles and hand techniques of the Tomita Method to the release of tension throughout the entire body. You will find clear illustrations, straightforward explanations, and practical points for performing the treatments.
- Norio Tomita, Ph.D. -
After earning a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Keio University, Norio Tomita worked on the development of medical 3D ultrasound imaging systems, collaborating for many years with clinicians, particularly in cardiology.
He subsequently received his Ph.D. from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Université de Montréal, for research on low back pain and fascia using ultrasound imaging. He continues to investigate the function of fascia - the tissue that encloses and supports the organs and muscles and binds them together - and its role in the transmission of force.
He is also a practitioner trained in traditional Japanese manual therapy (Seitai) and in various massage techniques. Integrating that experience with his own research, he established his own method, which he practices clinically and teaches to fellow professionals.
