The author graduated first in his medical school class in psychiatry but could not find a psychiatry residency that acknowledged the existence or importance of patients' spiritual experiences. After completing an emergency medicine residency program at Johns Hopkins and working fifteen years in the field, he decided to go back to his first interest.
