This book comes at a time of recognition of the emotional needs of people with disabilities and emotional distress, following the disclosures at Winterbourne View, a secure facility for people with learning disabilities. It provides a model for understanding behaviour from the position of trauma and emotional distress and an approach to providing suitable services to enable people to have a better life. For many years, the more distressed individuals with disabilities have been detained in secure or other restricted services.
