Auch dieser Roman, der nach vierjähriger Entstehungszeit 1894 fertiggestellt war, wurde zunächst in einer Zeitschrift veröffentlicht. Die erste Buchausgabe erschien 1896. Major von Poggenpuhl, der an der Spitze seines Bataillons bei Gravelotte gefallen war, hinterließ seiner Frau, seinen drei Töchtern und zwei Söhnen "nichts als einen guten alten Namen und drei blanke Krönungstaler". Jahre später war die Familie von Pommersch-Stargard in einen Außenbezirk von Berlin gezogen, wo sie in ganz kleinen Verhältnissen, freilich aber mit der notwendigen Geschicklichkeit "zufrieden und beinahe standesgemäß" lebte. Standesgemäß - das bedeutete ein Einkommen zu finden, ohne einem täglichen Broterwerb nachzugehen. Die Söhne waren in einem preußischen Regiment, die Töchter wußten ihre persönlichen Talente so zu gebrauchen, daß sie im Umgang mit wohlhabenden Familienangehörigen und Bankiersfamilien allerlei finanzielle Vorteile wahrnehmen konnten, die nicht unbeträchtlich über die kleine Pension der Mutter hinauswuchsen und "den eisernen Einnahmebestand der Familie" bildeten. Detailliert in der Milieubeschreibung, realistisch in der Charakterisierung, gibt Fontane hier ein Familien- und Gesellschaftsbild, das im Blick auf das selbstbewußte und zielstrebige Handeln vor allem der weiblichen Mitglieder dieser Familie dem Bewußtsein der Mathilde Möhring (insel taschenbuch 1107) ähnelt.
