The purpose of this study is to investigate issues of motivation and identity from the perspective of four fourth grade students as they experience the reading workshop model of instruction for the first time. The reading workshop is one instructional framework that emphasizes motivation, identity and social interaction around text, while focusing on cognition and knowledge acquisition of developing readers.
