What if consciousness is not a substance hidden inside the body, but a condition the living human organization must continually produce?

In Consciousness: Connection, ATT, and the Repeated Birth of "I," independent researcher Sandeep Chavan presents a disciplined structural account of human consciousness. He argues that consciousness neither enters the organism nor leaves it. It emerges while a viable living system remains sufficiently connected, differentiated, temporally coordinated, and integrated for internal and external differences to become consequences for the organism as a whole.

The book develops a clear sequence: connection sustains the living geometry; difference creates Delta; Alignment Threshold Time determines whether that difference persists and propagates; integrated consequence becomes consciously available; and the self emerges as the interpreter capable of saying, "This is happening to me."

This framework separates processes that are often compressed into one event. Sensing is not perception. Perception is not necessarily experience. Consciousness is not awareness, attention, intelligence, memory, identity, or verbal report. Each occupies a distinct place in the architecture of the human conscious event.

The book's central insight is that consciousness repeatedly births the active self. During deep sleep, anaesthesia, syncope, and other interruptions, the first-person interpreter may cease while the living organization retains the capacity to reconstruct it. On waking, bodily activation, sensory orientation, context, memory, and unfinished intention gather again around one centre. The "I" does not return from elsewhere. It is rebuilt from what remained.

Memory then joins successive self-events into the apparent continuity of one enduring person. Identity forms as the changing historical, social, and relational geometry around that recurring self-anchor. Intelligence becomes the organization's resolving power, emotion changes priority and timing, and intention preserves a projected Delta strongly enough to reorganize present action toward a possible future.

The framework is compared carefully with Global Neuronal Workspace Theory, Integrated Information Theory, Recurrent Processing Theory, higher-order approaches, predictive processing, active inference, embodied cognition, and enactive theory. Rather than declaring these approaches wrong, Chavan connects their insights through six additions: nested ATT, consequence-bearing integration, repeated self-emergence, memory stitching, identity versions, and the no-arrival/no-departure formulation.

The book also examines wakefulness, focused attention, mind wandering, dreaming, deep sleep, sedation, anaesthesia, coma, cognitive motor dissociation, recovery, and death. It offers the ATT-Consequence Diagnostic, fifteen Chavanian Consciousness Principles, a research and falsification programme, and precise distinctions among self-capacity, self-state, and self-content.

Consciousness is written for readers of philosophy of mind, cognitive science, neuroscience, psychology, artificial intelligence, and interdisciplinary theories of the self. It is especially relevant to researchers, thinkers, students, clinicians, AI professionals, and readers seeking a serious alternative to both reductionist certainty and mystical explanation.

The final proposition is restrained but decisive: the "I" is real as an interpreter, but not permanent as a substance. It appears whenever the living human organization becomes available to itself strongly enough to say, "This is happening to me."
