From 1729 to 1857, Natchez was a city under siege.Its populace saw conflicts as flags of variousnations flew over the area. Frenchmen,Englishmen, Spaniards, Americans, Indians, andAfrican slaves interacted daily. This work examineshow Indians, whites, and slaves resisted againstthose who held economic and political clout.Through resistance acts, these seemingly weak groupstemporarily captured power, thus shifting the localbalance of power. Natchez was a hotbed ofresistance activity. Natchez acts as a microcosm ofthe broader trends in southern history, as rebellionwas pervasive, highly meaningful, and part ofeveryday life. However, Natchez is also unique.Whoever controlled Natchez also commanded theMississippi River. White resistance against lawfulauthority provided slaves and Indians with anexample. Although whites saw their resistance as amatter of honor, they viewed other resistancedifferently. Elites worked to stop this rebellionand consolidate their own power. Their efforts wereunsuccessful resistance was part and parcel ofNatchez.
