Cambridge Noir

Cambridge Noir is a collection of monochrome photographs exploring Cambridge, its streets, and the landscapes that surround it.

Beginning with street photography in the city, the photographs move in tandem with the transition between day and night, witnessing the ever-changing nature of an eternal place. The journey then leaves the streets behind for the countryside, where familiar landscapes become increasingly fragmented, dreamlike and uncertain.

As night returns, the photographs reveal the darker, more gothic facets of the city. Forms dissolve into shadow, light becomes elusive and the familiar gradually dissolves into mystery.

For the photographer, Cambridge is a forever-present protagonist in his life; a living landscape of memory, attachment and ambivalence. The photographs approach Cambridge not as a tourist might, but through the complicated familiarity of a place that is 'home', and everything intertwined within that relationship between a person and a place.

Cambridge Noir is an exploration of seeing, atmosphere and perception, moving between the recognisable and the strange, the beautiful and the uncanny, the seen and unseen.
