The fortress of Burgos is one of the best preserved Napoleonic sites in the whole of Europe, and of its type is virtually unique, and was in fact laid down by no less a figure than the Emperor Napoleon himself. For a full month in the autumn of 1812, meanwhile, the 2,000-strong garrison defied the Duke of Wellington. In this work a leading historian of the Peninsular War teams up with a leading conflict archaeologist to examine the reasons for Wellington's failure, but also the historic city that formed the backdrop to the siege itself; the history and nature of the fortress that defeated Wellington; the experience of Burgos of French occupation; the almost unknown campaign that led to the attack on the fortress; the impact of the Peninsular War on the development of Burgos after 1814; and, finally, the remains of the fortress today.
