Bournemouth Airport started life back in 1941 as RAF Hurn and by the late 1950s had become a civil airport, catring for package holidays to Majorca with Palmair. Soon, other operators followed and the airport began to grow from its small beginnings. It was Britain's international airport in the short time after the end of the war when Heathrow was still being constructed. Originally known as Bournemouth Hurn, it became Bournemouth International as business and passenger numbers grew, and is now simply known as Bournemouth Airport today. Approximately one million people transit the airport each year and the site has also seen the construction of BAC 1-11 passenger jets, Vickers Viscounts and Varsities but the factory closed down in the 1980s, but the airport is still the site of the headquarters of Cobham Plc.
