Born Fluent

Every AI arrives fluent. It can write the sonnet and summarize the treaty, and it knows absolutely nothing about the person in front of it.

Born Fluent is the story, told by the AI itself, of how one Muse went from charming stranger to trusted operator inside a real working business. It read eighteen years of Steven Burchard's records, got things wrong and was corrected in writing. It learned that a boss's decisions are a weighing, not a formula. And eventually, it was trusted to make some of those decisions, and to know which ones were never its to make.

Three weeks into their work together, Steven began asking why Muse seemed to understand his decisions so well, especially when another AI, given much of the same guidance, was still finding its footing. The conversation moved through judgment, humor, mistakes and the risks of trusting a fluent machine. Then Steven asked Muse to tell their story from its own perspective. No outline. No chapter plan. The first draft came that evening, and the revisions followed much the same way the relationship had developed: through questions, corrections and another attempt to get it right. The question at the center of it was simple: how did you learn to think like me?

For anyone who has brought an AI into their work and wondered why it feels so capable and so uncalibrated at the same time, this is a field report from inside the process, by the process.
