Der Tod gehört zum menschlichen Leben und niemand weiß, wann er uns ereilt. Dies liegt nicht in unserer Hand, sondern allein in der des Allmächtigen oder des Schicksals.Geht man nun davon aus, dass dieses Problem nur in unserer Gesellschaft zeitgemäß ist, so liegt ein Irrtum vor. Das Anliegen dieser Arbeit ist es, der Frage nachzugehen, wie frühere Generationen mit diesem Thema umgingen. Exemplarisch soll dies an einem lyrischen Werk der Barockzeit erarbeitet werden.Der Vanitas Gedanke, also die Vorstellung von der Vergänglichkeit alles Irdischen, war eines der bedeutendsten Motive der Barockliteratur und prägt vor allem die Dichtung des wohl bekanntesten Lyrikers jener Epoche: Andreas Gryphius. Es werden die erste und zweite Fassung seines Gedichts Vanitas, vanitatum et omnia vanitas. Es ist alles gantz eytel. herangezogen, untersucht und verglichen. Zwischen beiden Ausgaben liegen fast 30 Jahre. Warum eine Überarbeitung erfolgte und ob das Sonett dadurch seinen ursprünglichen Sinn verlor, wird durch einen Vergleich deutlich werden.
