A Room Without A View

In one year I got fired from a dream Broadway job, my relationship with my mother faltered, and
the man I thought I would spend the rest of my life with told me that I was intolerable and that
contact with me made him physically ill.

I consider myself a relatively good person, so naturally I had some questions.

Had I hurt people without realizing it? Was I difficult, chaotic, incapable, intolerable? Were these
descriptions of my behavior, or had they become explanations of my character?

I had spent most of my life believing that if I explained myself clearly enough, people would
eventually understand what I meant.

This was, in retrospect, adorable.

It was also the central administrative error of my life.

In A Room Without a View, Wheeler Hubbell reconstructs the record of a relationship, a
workplace, a family, and the late recognition of his neurodivergence. Moving among scene,
memory, essay, and investigation-with backstage "Half-Hour" interludes at the wig station
before curtain-he traces how complicated sequences become portable verdicts.
The verdict travels.
The sequence disappears.
And another person's interpretation acquires more authority than the record itself.

With wit and forensic precision, Hubbell separates what happened from what was inferred,
conduct from character, and another person's experience of him from the person he actually
was. The result is a queer, neurodivergent memoir about trying to become knowable to yourself
after other people have already explained you.

It does not move toward innocence.

It moves toward accuracy.
