At the height of China's Cultural Revolution, Red Guard Xu Shaoying is almost beaten to death by his own comrades, yet he survives to become a high-level Party cadre.
Years later, Xu is an interpreter at the Indian Embassy in Beijing. Then, an unexpected order sends him down to an agricultural commune in Tibet, close to the frontier with Sikkim. Ruled by the Chogyal and his American princess-consort, Sikkim is then an Indian protectorate also claimed by China.
Xu decides to defect to India, but discovers that escaping China is not simply a matter of crossing a line on a map. He finds himself entangled with Indian intelligence, Chinese-backed rebels and a Himalayan kingdom in turmoil. Xu is one man caught in a web stretching from Beijing and Tibet to Gangtok and Delhi; a fly dashing itself against an invisible wall.
