Dear discerning reader
Thomas Hartley returns to London in 1942 with two wounds. One sits in his shoulder, aching in rhythm with the distant guns. The other sits deeper, beyond bandages and doctors: the knowledge that he helped occupy a person whose stubborn dignity has unsettled him more than any bullet.
The city he comes back to is broken, streets in ruins, docks scared by the Blitz, houses erased from the map. As he walks through the fog and shattered stones, he realises that London and Baghdad share the same invisible war: the battle over what the human soul does with power, guilt and hope.
In May 1941, British planes, guns and maps collided with Iraqi soldiers and tribesmen who refused to kneel, even when the odds turned brutal. For most of the world, that conflict became a footnote in the history of empire, a short campaign, quickly "stabilised". For one British soldier, it became something else: the beginning of a slow, dangerous awakening.

On a damaged dock by the Thames, Thomas meets Clara, a young woman waiting for a ship from Basra that will never come. Together they begin to discover that the world outside is not a neutral stage. Fog thickens when despair rises.
A long-dead lamp flickers when real pity breaks through numbness. Streets seem to bend when a single, clean intention presses against distance. Under the rubble and the ration books, something quietly terrifying emerges we are not just victims of reality. We are, in ways we barely understand, its architects.
This is not a war novel about battles and medals.
It is a novel about projection, about the way inner states carve themselves into streets and buildings, about how one man's decision to clean his conscience can alter the texture of a city.
As Thomas withdraws into fasting, silence and ruthless honesty, he begins to see events before they happen, steadies collapsing beams with a touch, folds space in moments of urgent need. Each "gift" arrives not as a reward, but as a test: will he use it to raise himself above others, or to serve quietly as a small ethical motor in a world obsessed with grand machinery?
Set between bombed London and the ghost of 1941 Iraq, this book invites the reader to rethink the relationship between soul and city, law and freedom, guilt and repair. It slips the language of intention (Niya ) and inner cleansing into an English narrative, weaving together Shariati-like moral seriousness with the understated drama of European literary fiction.
If you have ever felt that history happens "to" you while decisions are made elsewhere, this story offers a different lens. It asks: what if the way you stand in front of loss, the way you place one brick, the way you refuse one small act of cruelty, is already part of how the universe writes itself?
Open the book.
Walk with Thomas through fog and broken stones.
You may find, as he does, that the deepest revolutions do not begin with flags, but with a single, watchful heart that decides the world will hurt fewer people for the comfort of others, and then quietly live as if that decision matters.
