It is the mid-1980s, and Mack Mercer and fifteen of his closest friends are heading north toward Boonville, New York, for the Woodsmen's Field Days with motorcycles, bad attitudes, questionable judgment, and enough beer-fueled confidence to convince themselves they are still twenty-five.

They are not.

What begins as a wild weekend of lumberjack contests, bars, motorcycles, women, practical jokes, filthy stories, fistfights, and spectacularly bad decisions quickly turns into the kind of disaster people will still be talking about years later. These men do not simply visit Boonville. They descend on it.

There is Rocco, the foul-mouthed philosopher who gives relationship advice nobody should ever follow. Danny, the handsome lifelong player who likes Paula, wants Roberta, and discovers over a stack of pancakes that freedom and loneliness are not the same thing. Bones still believes his fists can solve anything. Cal will gamble on almost anything that moves. Wheels refuses to admit he is getting older. Moose looks terrifying but cannot pass an injured animal without stopping. Radio never shuts up because silence brings back memories he would rather bury. Bobby is hiding unemployment from his family. Lou has spent his life burying everyone except the grief he carries himself. And the rest of the sixteen are carrying secrets of their own.

Then the weekend goes too far.

A wrecked porch puts sixteen drunken bikers face-to-face with Nell Kavanagh, a seventy-nine-year-old woman who has absolutely no intention of being intimidated by them.

Instead of calling the police, Nell orders them to sit down.

Then she tells them a story.

It is the unbelievable story of another group of sixteen troubled young men from decades earlier-men who drank too much, fought too hard, frightened people, and believed the worst things they had survived gave them permission to become the worst versions of themselves.
