A History of the Irish Post Office is the first complete history of the Irish Postal Service over 300 years to the present day, where it remains Irelands largest employer, An Post. Originally, Irelands letters were delivered by post boys who walked or used their own horses. Poorly paid and equipped, they were sometimes attacked as they worked. Before we had post boxes, postmen walked the streets of Dublin, ringing a bell to collect letters. The Mail Coach was introduced in 1789, often with an armed guard on board. When railways were invented, people soon switched to the new mode of travel and the Post Office gradually stopped using
