Ostercappeln, 1188 erstmals urkundlich erwähnt, war in früheren Zeiten bischöfliches Lehnsgut auf einem Teil der Herringhauser Mark. Hier soll um 1040 in strategisch günstiger Lage die älteste Kirche des Wittlager Landes als Wehrkirche errichtet worden sein. Neben der Kirche entstand das Weigbild Ostercappeln , wie es noch 1784 -1790 in den Plänen von Johann Wilhelm du Plat bezeichnet wurde, also kein Dorf und keine Bauerschaft, sondern ein städtebauliches Gebilde mit eigener Gerichtsbarkeit, dem "Gogericht". Von da an schlägt das Buch einen Bogen durch die Geschichte des Ortes durch das ausgehende Mittelalter, den 30-jährigen Krieg und das 19. Jahrhundert mit seiner Auswanderungswelle und dem Niedergang der hausindustriellen Weberei und des Leggewesens. An seine Stelle traten zum Ausgang des 19. Jahrhunderts die Sommerfrische , und Ostercappeln mauserte sich zum regionalen Gesundheitsstandort mit Krankenhaus als medizinische Anlaufstelle für den Landkreis Wittlage.
